Proud of Our History

Almost 100 Years

Our grandfather started Gilberg Furniture almost 100 years ago. We are proud of our history and continue to operate as he did by providing quality products with integrity and a focus on superior customer service.

How We Got Started

Gilberg Furniture was founded in 1926 by Paul Gilberg and Earl Hegemier as the "People’s Radio and Gift Shop". The business had its beginnings on South Washington Street across the street from Schwieterman's Drug Store (where the Marathon Gas station used to be). The People’s Radio and Gift Shop eventually expanded their product offerings by adding items like lamps and chairs. Paul and Earl eventually needed a larger location and moved to a North Main Street location in 1929 and along with the move changed the name to Gilberg and Hegemier. This location was just north of the current Crown Equipment offices (the old IGA building).

Paul’s son John, and John’s wife, Joyce, joined the business in 1960. Their third move to a new location on West Monroe Street also happened as they again needed more floor space. The Bicycle Museum of America is currently located in this building.

In 1962, due to health reasons, Earl Hegemier sold his portion of the the business to the Gilbergs and the name of the business was changed to Gilberg Furniture, TV and Appliances. In September of 1996, Gilberg Furniture moved to its present location on the South side of New Bremen on State Route 66.

The Third Generation

Gilberg Furniture is now operated by the third generation of the Gilberg Family. John and Joyce’s children, Joe and Jill (Gilberg ) Borkowski joined the business in 1987, and later they were joined by James and Diane (Bushman) Gilberg. John and Joyce have since “retired”, but customers will still see them on many occasions helping out at the store. Much appreciation also goes to the many past and current employees that help(ed) in the success of our business.
